FPC Applications in PS5 — Overview

The extensive use of FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) is a key enabler of the PS5’s compact design and advanced functionality. Its applications are critical across both the console and the DualSense controller.

1. Console Internal Connections

FPC serves as the backbone for internal signal and power distribution, connecting the motherboard, optical drive, and power supply within the console’s tightly packed chassis.

Key Requirement:

  • Low Resistance: The high signal integrity requirements of the PS5’s custom architecture demand low-resistance FPCs to ensure proper data flow and power delivery. Non-compliant cables can cause functional failures.

2. DualSense Controller Modules

FPC is central to the controller’s advanced features.

  • Adaptive Triggers (L2/R2): The force feedback mechanism relies on a durable FPC connection between the trigger mechanism and the mainboard. It must withstand tens of thousands of flex cycles without failure.
  • Button Contact Film: The flexible circuit under the buttons that translates key presses into electrical signals.

Reliability & Durability

FPC durability is a critical factor in the DualSense controller’s lifespan. Data from controller repairs show that up to 63% of failures are due to traditional circuit board fractures in high-flex areas like the joysticks and triggers. Upgrading to high-performance polyimide (PI) FPCs significantly improves reliability, with flex life increasing from about 38,000 cycles to over 122,000 cycles, and a corresponding drop in failure rates.
